WatchDawgs - Bystander Effect

What is the Bystander Effect?

The Bystander Effect is a phenomenon in which the more people who witness a risky or unsafe situation, the less likely anyone is to intervene. Silence and passivity contribute to the problem.

There are many reasons why people choose not to get involved. Generally, this may include:

  • not perceiving the situation as a problem
  • assuming someone else will do something
  • not knowing how to help
  • may feel it is none of their business to intervene
  • feel their personal safety is at risk

When WatchDawgs do intervene, they often say that it was the right thing to do
and would want someone to intervene if the roles were reversed.
