5 Health Reasons to Wear Sunglasses

  1. Skin Cancer: Up to 10 percent of all skin cancers are found on and around the eyelid.
  2.
  3. Cataracts: An association of sun exposure with cortical cataract has been well established. Cataracts (cloudiness in the lens of the eye) are the leading cause of blindness and visual impairment throughout the world with risk highest among those with high sun exposure at younger ages.
  4.
  5. Macular Degeneration: Over time, UV light may play a role in damaging the macula lutea (an area of the eye with millions of light-sensing cells, which allow us to see fine details clearly), potentially leading to blurriness and vision loss.
  6.
  7. Pterygium: This abnormal growth of tissue—also called surfer’s eye—may progress slowly from either corner of the eye crossing over from the white part (sclera) onto the cornea. This may lead to irritation and/or disturbance of vision.
  8.
  9. Photokeratitis: Essentially a sunburn of the eye, this is temporary (healing within 48 hours) but can be painful, causing blurred vision, light sensitivity, and the sensation of having sand in your eye.

UV Light Rays

Our pupils can dilate (get larger) behind dark sunglass lenses. This allows more UV light to enter the eye. It is very important that your sunglasses have 99% to 100% UVA and UVB protection to block out these light rays. Otherwise, the lenses will allow more damaging rays into your eyes than if you weren’t wearing any sunglasses at all. All sunglasses at the UGA Shade Shack are 100% UVA and UVB protected with a scratch resistant coating and ultraviolet protection.

Many are available with polarized and/or mirrored lenses. Your prescription and/or lifestyle may create a need for custom add-ons. Don’t worry! Licensed Dispensing Opticians are trained and available to help you with this process and to help you with pricing. Come by and let us look at your prescription and discuss your needs.

Lens Options

Polarized Sun Lens:
Tired of squinting? Virtually eliminate surface glare from water, asphalt or other flat & horizontal reflective surfaces. Preventing bright sun light from damaging or discomforting the eye is very important for eye health. Polarized lenses are available in a variety of colors.

Custom Color Lens:
Fashion or function, customize your tint color: light, medium or dark, gradient or solid.

Sun Mirror Coating:
Sunglass lenses with a reflective coating that decreases the amount of light passing through the lens making it useful for conditions of sand, water, snow & higher altitudes. This provides additional glare reduction and a fashionable look. Available in a wide assortment of colors.

No Glare Sun:
Glare reduction applied to the back side of the lens to minimize reflections of light that enter from behind the lens while providing visual comfort. This is also known as an anti-reflective property.
