What IS Project Condom?
Based on the television reality show Project Runway, ONE Condom Company donates colored, non-lubricated, non-packaged, expired condoms that are used as the "fabric" for creating a wearable clothing garment. Culminating efforts result in a high-energy, one-hour fashion-show where designers compete for having created the best design (see judging criteria for details). The fashion show also includes educational skits as "commercial breaks."
Mission: Project Condom seeks to promote safe and healthy sexual decisions by reducing social stigma surrounding condom usage and celebrating the protection and respect for yourself and others when ready to consent to a sexual act.
Justification: According to the 2009 National College Health Assessment, 65% of University of Georgia (UGA) undergraduate students report being sexually active. Of those 65%, only 52% reported using condoms the last time they had vaginal intercourse; 26% use condoms during anal sex; and 3% use condoms during oral sex. Additionally, framing this program after Project Condom at the University of South Carolina, UGA researchers cite data that undergraduate students report condoms being "unnatural, not cool, and inconvenient."
Target Population: UGA undergraduate students
Theoretical Basis: By utilizing the Health Belief Model, Project Condom addresses perceived barriers to using condoms and perceived benefits, as well as susceptibility and severity.
- Increase awareness in UGA students that the only 100% effective method of preventing unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is practicing abstinence. (Abstinence is defined as refraining from oral, vaginal, and anal intercourse.)
- Increase awareness in UGA students of the importance of correct, consistent condom use to prevent unplanned pregnancies and STI transmission.
- Reduce stigma surrounding condoms.
- Increase the number of UGA undergraduate students who use condoms during sexual intercourse.
- Decrease the number of unplanned pregnancies and STI prevalence in UGA undergraduate students.
History: Project Condom was created by Ryan Wilson, Sexual Health Coordinator from the University of South Carolina in 2008 to promote safe and healthy sexual decision-making. Since the initial 2008 show, shows have continued annually. Based on similarities between the University of South Carolina and UGA, Project Condom was initiated in January 2010 at UGA. On April 21, 2010 UGA students created garments and had them displayed on mannequins during a health festival at the Tate Plaza centrally-located on campus. The first UGA fashion show was held on October 12, 2010 in Memorial Hall Ballroom.

Judging Criteria for 2010 Show:
For each of the following areas, designs are scored on a 1-5 scale.
The highest possible cumulative score is 20.
Theme: safer sex positive, does not marginalize groups or perpetuate stereotypes
Design: creativity, innovative use of materials, color, camouflage of condoms

Theme: There is a common saying in the Sexual Health community that the most common symptom for an STI is no symptom. My theme emphasized this point. The dress was camouflage in color to illustrate the 'blending in' of STIs within the body. I also wore slippers as to not make noise down the runway (silent attack approach).
How you felt: AMAZING! I felt everyone in the audience appreciate the time and effort I put into the dress and really showed an overwhelming amount of support. I believe the audience was thrilled with the show and the educational information they received.

Design 2: Woman Empowerment

Theme: Woman Empowerment because there is the misconception that men have to bring the condom when in actuality I believe a woman should always be prepared for any situation.
How you felt: During the show I was really nervous because I really wanted to win and get my dress shown and after I was so relieved because the dress I had been stressing over for the past month was done and the show was a success.

Theme: I chose the theme 'A Condom for All Occasions' because I believe that any type of person can and should wear a condom during intercourse as well as during most action beforehand. Even classy people wear condoms!
How you felt: I was a wreck during the show because not only did I have to pay attention to my model and her needs, but I also was the stage director so I was telling everyone else where to go and how to walk! It was absolute craziness but after the show, a few friends came up to me and said how absolutely amazing and incredible the show was. I knew then that all the madness and time was totally worth it!

Theme: I wanted to use the iconic outfit that Beyonce wears in her Single Ladies video to promote the importance of women being responsible for their own protection. I also was hoping to reduce the stigma of condom use by pairing my outfit with a positive pop-culture icon.
How you felt: During the show I felt amazing, it was so great to see so many students come out in support of this event and to see all the hard work that the other designers put into their outfits!

How you felt: When the day of the show came around, I was relieved to have completed my entry and proud of the final product. I was also very excited to see the impressive work of the competition.

Design 6: The Fit That Flatters

Theme: There are so many different types and variations of condoms that it is important to find "the fit that flatters." Sexuality in itself is about being an individual and finding the "right fit" of condom increase enjoyment for those involved, thus encouraging condom use. The dress design was 100% custom designed and sewn to fit and flatter the model. Although it may take time and effort to find the right fit, if you find the fit that flatters, you should NEVER have an excuse not to use a condom, every time!
How you felt: Before, during, and after the show I only had one thought. I was so excited to be a part of something so wonderful, fun, educational, and entertaining. There are so many negative stigmas surrounding sex, and instead of addressing the issues, people ignore them. Project Condom gave so many people the opportunity to realize that ignoring issues does not make them go away, but by embracing them, we can make a difference.

How you felt: The show itself was a bit confusing for designers. In all, we had a great time for a good cause. It was an amazing experience and I think we all learned more about safer sex than we could imagine. We met some amazing people and saw some amazing garments. Thanks again!

Design 8: Don't Test your luck; cover it up!

Theme: It's all about not gambling with your health and practicing safer sex every time. When I think of luck, I think of four leaf clovers. My father's family is from Ireland and so four leaf clovers have a special place in my heart. I used green as the main color of my dress because four leaf clovers are green and I thought it would work best with the theme. I used some yellow and black in the dress to add some variety in the dress.
How you felt: The show was really awesome. I felt very proud to be a part if it. I was very impressed with the creativity of every designer. I was certainly excited during and after the show. The show made me super pumped and ready to get started on next year's dress. It was a blast.
Judge/MC comments: "Not many designers used this many layered condoms all the way around the entire dress. It was obvious that this garment was extremely labor-intensive, but also that it was meaningful to the designer- it was a very personal design."

Theme: UGA is the number one party school in America, according to The Princeton Review. With drinking often come risky behaviors such as unprotected sex. I want to encourage people to always be prepared!
How you felt: During the show, I was very excited! I worked very hard on my dress and I was ready to show the world my creation! After the show, I felt very accomplished. Not only did I go in front of hundreds of people in condoms, I also helped to promote safer sex practices.

Theme: I chose the theme of the Power of One, because I believe that by practicing safer sex and using a condom you are not only protecting your self, but you are protecting yourself, your partner, his future partners, and your future partners. By simply using one condom every time you have intercourse you can prevent an unintended pregnancy, by using one condom you can prevent an STI, and by using one condom you can prevent HIV/AIDS. By simply taking those few seconds to put on a condom you can help prevent so much, so please use a condom.
How you felt: Throughout the show I felt anxious and excited to see our entire Fashion show succeed. I was very happy and pleased of the amount of students that supported us and were there for the show. After the show I was really happy and excited to see what my friends and the audience thought about the show. I am so happy to have been a part of such a great event!
Judge/MC comments: "This was actually Joanna's second dress. Last year for our spring promotion she made a completely different dress and was committed so much to this event that she made a second dress for the fashion show and talked her sister into making one too!" & "Like the design and belt"

How you felt: After the show I felt like everything was a success. It's the first year and there's are things we can improve on, but for the first show it was pretty good. Next year we need to use what the audience/we noticed that could better the show.

While the front/bodice of this dress was originally supposed to carry out throughout the dress, it consumed so much time, she had to modify her design by gluing on unrolled condoms across the skirt and back."

Theme: I call my dress "Let's Talk About It!" The basic idea: I chose bright colors because I wanted the dress to command attention. I don't want it to hide away in shame. How you felt: I was overjoyed to have been able to participate in something I am so passionate about. It was an incredible experience, and I would love to have the chance to do it again!

Theme: Women all around the United states want to look and feel sexy, that's why Victoria's Secret is one of the most recognized brands in the United States. But condoms can be sexy and empowering also.
How you felt: I felt so great. I had spent so many hours on my dress and it was so great winning! Third may not be much but it felt great considering that it was my first time doing anything like this. Even my mother that thinks that condoms are not proper to talk about, was proud of what I made and showed all of her friends!
