Physical Therapy Services

What do Physical Therapists do?
Assess movement disorders. Evaluate bone, ligaments, tendons, nerves and other tissues to see how they affect movement. Pain is usually involved, but not always. Physical Therapy can be beneficial for anything that limits someone in his/her ability to function in his/her normal environment.

Our philosophy is to return to an individual his/her highest level of function in the quickest and safest fashion.

Appointments may be scheduled by calling 706-542-8643 or online using OpenCommunicator.

A prescription or referral to physical therapy IS REQUIRED. Please bring your prescription for PT to your first visit. The Physical Therapy department can help coordinate this prescription or referral if you would like assistance.

Cost

There is a charge for Physical Therapy and Massage services at UHC. We take extra effort to maintain high quality care at reasonable prices and will work carefully with you to develop affordable treatment options. Services for students who have paid the current health fee are available at a reduced rate. Charges at each visit may vary depending on the treatments provided and will be discussed with you at your initial visit.

Missed Physical Therapy and massage appointments will incur a $15 charge. Please cancel appointments the day prior to avoid this charge.

Insurance

The University Health Center provides direct billing to insurance companies. PRIOR to starting physical therapy, we recommend calling your individual insurance carrier to confirm that physical therapy services at the University Health Center are covered under your specific plan for your current diagnosis. We are the preferred provider for the Pearce & Pearce Student Health Plan. We are not able to participate as a preferred provider with other plans or as a HMO member. Patients are responsible for any fees or charges not covered or reimbursed by their insurance.

Your Physical Therapy Visit

Please arrive about 10 minutes before your appointment time and be prepared to stay approximately one hour.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing or sportswear to allow ease of access to and movement of the injured body part. Shorts and T-shirt are ideal.

Please bring your insurance card, recent (within 30 days) prescription or referral for PT, and any other information that you think might be helpful to the therapist.

The physical therapist will review your information and ask you questions about your problem or injury. An examination of the problem area will take place to assess your movement and mobility, strength, flexibility, and other signs such as muscle and joint tightness and pain. This will help the therapist to determine what factors are leading/contributing to your problems and develop a treatment plan specifically for you. You will also receive treatment at this first visit. Frequency of treatment varies. You may be seen once to three times a week for 6-8 weeks, or you may be seen for one to two visits total. You and your therapist will determine what is best for you in your rehabilitation.

At each visit, the physical therapist will provide treatment to you, discuss your progress with you, and provide direction for your continued improvement. You will be encouraged to ask questions and participate as much as you would like. When you have improved and have made sufficient progress, the therapist will discharge you from care and inform your doctor of your progress.

Please, ask questions so that you understand your care all the things that you can do to continue to improve.
