Accessing Services
Physical Therapy
Referrals to physical therapy can be obtained from a family physician, specialist
in the community or from a physician at the University Health Center.
Massage Therapy
A referral is not necessary. Call 706-542-8634 to make an appointment.
Insurance
The University Health Center provides direct billing to insurance companies.
Please call your individual insurance carrier to confirm that physical therapy services at the University Health Center are covered under your specific plan prior to your initial visit.
Cost
Physical Therapy
Physical Therapy services are not covered by the current health fee. Charges for physical therapy are incurred at a patients inital visit and also for ongoing care. These charges vary depending on the treatments provided and will be discussed at the inital visit.
Massage Therapy
$50 (1 hour) / $30 (30 min)
Your First Physical Therapy Visit
Please be prepared to stay approximately one hour.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing or sportswear to allow ease of access to
and movement of the injured body part. Shorts and T-shirt are ideal. A sports
bra is recommended for women if experiencing back, neck or shoulder problems.
Please bring your referral and any other paper work that you think might be important.
Please arrive about 10 minutes before your appointment time. You will be
shown into a treatment room, where your evaluation will take place. This
is where the therapist will review your referral and ask you questions about
your problem or injury. An examination of the problem area will take place
to look at range of motion, strength and other signs such as muscle tightness
and pain. This will allow the therapist to distinguish the problem and devise
a treatment program to alleviate the symptoms. Common treatment options
are ultrasound, heat, ice, joint, mobilization, massage and exercise.
Prior to continuing, the therapist will discuss the findings of the evaluation,
including goals of care, treatment options and number of visits. You will
be encouraged to ask questions and participate as much as you would like.
What happens after the first physical therapy visit
Please continue with regular PT visits as requested by the therapist. If
you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, please call. Following
the home advice that the therapist gives you (i.e. postural advice, home
exercise) will be helpful and assist your progress. After you have made
sufficient progress, you and the therapist will discuss being discharged
from care.
Please, ask questions so that you understand all the things that you can do to continue to improve.
