Sport Psychology

Sport psychology may be described as a science of success (Murphy, 1996). The focus of sport psychology is on healthy functioning and performance enhancement. It is the pursuit of excellence that involves learning mind/body skills that enable an individual to realize his/her potential. Sport psychology involves the pursuit of meaningful goals unique to each individual. It is the coaching of success. Well-researched mind/body skills enable a student athlete to be successful on the playing field as well as in the classroom and with other personal goals.

The mind/body skills taught at CAPS include:

  • emotional management
  • focusing/concentration
  • mastery rehearsal
  • strength building
  • goal setting
  • distraction control
  • creative thinking
  • relaxation
  • coping with athletic injuries
  • dealing with the ending of your athletic career
  • concerns of athletes
  • sport performance enhancement
  • team cohesion
  • coaching effectiveness training
  • development of mental toughness
  • goal setting for peak performance

These skills allow one to pursue meaningful experiences, to reach for excellence, and to achieve meaningful dreams.

Students who wish assistance may schedule an initial consultation (IAC) appointment (see accessing services). At that time they may request to see one of the clinicians who specialize in sport psychology. Consultation with coaching staff and exercise professionals is also available for team building, performance enhancement, and clinical issues.
