Direct service hours:
Fellows will complete approximately 20 hours of clinical service per week including individual and/or group therapy, outreach, crisis services (walk-in or phone triage), and direct supervision of a practicum student. During times of the year where there is more of a demand for services, it is expected that the priority will be upon seeing students who present for counseling at CAPS.

Indirect service hours:
Fellows will complete approximately 20 hours of indirect service including supervision, completing case notes and other aspects of case management (e.g. phone calls, referrals), meetings, and professional development.

Direct and indirect service hours log: Fellows are expected to keep a weekly log of service hours for licensure. An example of a form is included.

Post-doctoral Seminars

A core part of the post-doctoral training program involves training seminars. The seminars are designed to facilitate the acquisition of skills necessary to become a culturally competent therapist. To assist in the integration of the practice and science of psychology, readings may be assigned to support some training activities. In keeping with the emphasis on experiential learning, Fellows may be provided an opportunity to engage in self-exploration. Thus, personal self-disclosures may occur.

Seminars take place every other week for two hours. They are presented by CAPS staff and psychologists/therapists in the community. Seminar topics vary depending upon the interests of the Fellows. Among the seminars which have been offered are:

  • Eating Disorders: Assessment and Treatment
  • Use of Art in Psychotherapy
  • Exploring Grief and Loss in Therapy
  • Developing a Private Practice
  • Harm Reduction Psychotherapy and Motivational Interviewing
  • Sex Therapy and Treatment of Sexual Disorders
  • Counseling Strategies for LGB Students
  • Counseling Strategies for Transgendered/Intersexed students
  • Hypnosis in Clinical Practice
  • Multicultural Issues in Counseling
  • Mindfulness and Meditation
  • Assessment and Treatment of Alcohol and Drug Disorders
  • Treatment of Panic and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
  • Assessment and Treatment of ADHD

A Professional Development group is also offered on a weekly basis. In this group, postdoctoral fellows along with the training director discuss professional issues (e.g. ethical concerns, APA practice guidelines) as they arise during the year. This group also offers a place to discuss personal reactions/concerns and to give and receive support.
