Do I need an appointment to be seen?
Yes. The first step is to call CAPS (706-542-2273) for a telephone screening appointment during regular hours. Following the telephone screening, if you and the CAPS clinician decide that services at CAPS are appropriate, an initial consultation (IAC) appointment will be scheduled for you during regular working hours Monday through Friday. If you are experiencing an emergency or are in immediate crisis you can walk-in for services. After hours you may reach the on-call clinician by calling the UGA police (706-542-2200). Follow-up counseling or psychiatric appointments can be made by calling 706-542-2273. For more information read accessing services.

Please be aware that you will be charged a fee if you fail to keep an appointment or do not cancel an appointment by 5:00 pm the working day prior to the appointment.

I've run out of medications, what do I do?
Medication is prescribed and managed for those students referred to a psychiatrist by a CAPS clinician. If you are in need of both counseling and medication, you must receive both of these services from CAPS clinicians. If you are prescribed medication by a physician outside UGA and want to transfer your treatment here, you will first need to call CAPS for a telephone screening. We will need to obtain records from previous physician(s) and mental health provider(s) to best serve your needs. If you have established treatment with a CAPS psychiatrist and want a refill, you may call to schedule a follow-up appointment (see Psychiatric services: Medication evaluation and monitoring).

Please be aware that there is a late service fee if you contact CAPS for a medication refill within 24 hours of medications expiring.

My friend is really upset, what should I do?
Speak directly with your friend and encourage her/him to call CAPS for a telephone screening. If it is an emergency during regular working hours, your friend can be seen for a crisis walk-in session. You are welcome to accompany her/him to CAPS. After regular hours, you should contact UGA police (706-542-2200) to have the on-call clinician paged.

Are there limits on CAPS services?
Yes. CAPS offers short-term individual and limited psychiatric services. Individual counseling at CAPS is designed to focus on specific goals in a short-term model. At CAPS, we attempt to resolve student concerns in 6 to 10 session per academic year. Referrals to other resources will be provided to you if you are in need of longer-term or more intensive therapy as well as those looking for or requiring specialized psychiatric or other care. Group participation is not time limited. Students who have paid the student health fee may access CAPS' services at a reduced rate. Please keep in mind that access to CAPS service is based on the nature of your presenting concern, availability of resources, and a determination if CAPS or another agency (on campus or in the community) may best serve your needs.

What are the fees for services?
Services are offered at a reduced cost for students who have paid the student health fee. There is no charge for the initial telephone screening. There is also no additional charge for an initial walk-in or consultation (IAC) appointment for students who have paid the student health fee. There are costs associated with additional counseling and psychiatric services and for other services, such as group participation and testing. For more information read Costs.

Please contact CAPS at 706-542-2273 if you have additional questions about costs.

What if I cannot afford treatment at CAPS?
Please call for a telephone screening session. The therapist with whom you speak will assess your concerns and make recommendations regarding resources available at CAPS, on campus, and in the community. There are a limited number of need-based grants available to help students with the costs of CAPS' services. Please keep in mind that there is no charge for the initial walk-in or IAC appointment (following the telephone screening) for students who have paid the health fee.

Can I still receive services at CAPS if I don't pay the student health fee?
Yes, but not at a reduced rate. Please contact CAPS at 706-542-2273 if you have questions about costs.

Are services confidential?
YES! CAPS staff provides help to students in a confidential, nurturing environment. CAPS staff adheres to professional and ethical guidelines that allow disclosure of information about you only with your written consent.
