Club DrugsWhat Does it Mean?"Club drugs" is another word for illicit drugs, primarily synthetic and usually taken at nightclubs, raves or all night parties to enhance the club experience. Who Uses it and Why?These drugs have gained popularity because of the false perception that they are non-harmful or addictive, unlike harder drugs such as heroin. The nationwide number of emergency room visits involving club drugs has more than quadrupled from 1994-1998. The rave atmosphere consists of loud techno music, extreme light shows, smoke and pyrotechnics. Users of club drugs report that the effects of the drugs heighten perceptions and increase visual stimulation. Other FactsThe drug quality is often times unknown and substitute drugs are sometimes sold when dealers are not able to provide a certain drug Because the desired drug is sometimes unavailable, dangerous combinations of drugs are often taken. This is a major risk for drug overdose, which is dangerous for the user and the emergency room personnel. |
