BASICS+

BASICS stands for Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students. It is an evidenced based program, designed specifically for use with college students. Students meet individually with a BASICS+ provider for at least four one hour sessions.

The goal of BASICS+ is to reduce risky behavior and reduce the immediate and long-term harmful consequences of drinking.

BASICS+ provides the student:

  1. an opportunity to assess the level of risk associated with his or her drinking
  2. an opportunity to develop and implement strategies to lower that level of risk
  3. and an opportunity for continued support and counseling if desired by the student

BASICS+ is entirely confidential.

Overview of the 4 sessions:

Session 1: Assessment

The first BASICS+ session is an information gathering session. The student is asked a number of questions about the incident that led to referral to the AOD Mandated Program, about his or her pattern and history of alcohol and/or other drug use, as well as more general questions about lifestyle. The purpose of this clinical interview is to identify the patterns and level of use and life choices that increase the student's risk for developing further alcohol and/ or other drug related problems.

Between the first and second sessions, the student must complete an online self-assessment called the e-CHUG. The student must also print the feedback summary and bring the printout to the second session.

Session 2: Feedback

The second session is a review of the assessment information obtained from the initial screening, the clinical interview, and the e-CHUG. The BASICS+ provider discusses what the student's risks are and provides advice about how to lower those risks. The BASICS+ provider helps the student process thoughts and feelings about the feedback.

As homework, the BASICS+ provider asks the student to think about the changes he or she needs tomake in patterns and levels of use and lifestyle in these terms:
  1. What changes would be best to make?
  2. What changes need to be made?
  3. What change is the student willing to make?

Session 3: Planning

In the third session, the student and BASICS+ provider discuss the student's answers to the three questions and then strategize how to successfully implement these changes. A formal Action Plan is developed, and the student is given at least two weekends to practice the strategies outlined in the plan.

Session 4: Exit Interview

In the fourth session, the student and BASICS+ provider process how well the student followed the plan and discuss the effectiveness of the strategies identified in the plan. The plan is revised and risk reduction strategies are discussed.

If needed or desired by the student, the student will be referred to other AOD or counseling services through the University Health Center or through community providers.
