Alcohol and Other Drug Mandated Program

The AOD Mandated Program provides evidenced-based education, intervention, and counseling services for students who have legal problems related to alcohol or drug use or who have violated UGA's alcohol and drug policy. Typically, students are referred to this program by Athens-Clarke County Municipal Court, UGA's Office of Judicial Programs, or by UGA Housing. Other agencies, such as Greek Life and the Athletic Association, may also refer to students to the program.

The AOD Mandated Program is designed to meet the needs of students based on the level of risk associated with each student's use of alcohol and/ or other drugs and the presence or absence of clinically significant emotional and behavioral problems. The purpose of the AOD Mandated Program is to provide services that will best meet the individual needs of our students in order to help those students avoid further problems related to alcohol and/or drug use. We want all students to be successful academically and in life.

The AOD Mandated program provides services to students with an initial offense or violation of UGA policy and with more than one offense or violation.

To access these services, call the Health Promotion Department at the University Health Center 706-542-8690.

Initial Offense or Violation of UGA Policy

All information will be kept confidential. After completing the screening, students are notified by secure email as to which program they may attend and the dates and times of the program.

The screening must be completed at least two weeks prior to the start of a particular month's program in order to be eligible to attend.

For Students with Two or More Offenses

AOD Advanced is typically offered to students who have had two or more offenses and have already taken PRIME for Life; however, students may take AOD Advanced after a first legal offense or violation of UGA policy if deemed necessary by nature of the offense and the concerns of the referring agency.

AOD Advanced is the most intensive mandated service. Whereas BASICS+ is more focused on changing the pattern of alcohol and drug use, AOD Advanced takes a broader look at the issues affecting a student's decision making and continued pattern of alcohol and/or drug related problems. Abstinence - for at least the short term - is strongly encouraged.

Students are asked to identify three problem areas and to make a goal for each area. The AOD Advanced provider helps the student identify what he or she needs to do to achieve those goals. The following topics are often discussed during AOD Advanced:

  • 0-1-3 guidelines
  • How alcohol affects decision making
  • Neurophysiologic effects of alcohol, marijuana ,and other drugs
  • Stress and anxiety management
  • Effective study habits
  • How to develop accountability in order to act more responsibly
  • How to develop a balanced lifestyle
  • Ways to have fun without drinking to get drunk

At the end of AOD Advanced, each student develops an Action Plan, in which he or she identifies what was learned from the experience, what in his or her life is most valued, how alcohol use affected those things, what he or she plans to do in terms of drinking from this point forward, what changes needed to be made, and how to make those changes.

The length of AOD Advanced depends on the needs and progress of the individual. Typically, AOD Advanced consists of an initial assessment session and then a minimum of four more individual sessions.

To schedule an appointment for AOD Advanced call the Health Promotion Department at the University Health Center: 706-542-8690.
