Expansion and Renovation Proposal

The University Health Center opened the current 81,000 sq. ft. facility in December 1997 following a two year construction period. The original program was reduced by 14,151 gross square feet and 74 parking spaces due to budget constraints related to inflated construction costs during the three year pre-Olympics construction boom. As a result, the Health Center opened with several clinical areas functioning in undersized spaces and with reduced parking. In 2002, the Counseling and Testing Services merged with the Health Center’s Mental Health Clinic forming the new Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS), doubling the existing mental health clinician staff and creating space pressure. Demand for mental and medical services continues to outstrip the estimated 3 to 4% increase in volume projected during the 1991 design phase of the current facility. Consistently high levels of student satisfaction suggest utilization and demand for services will at least parallel levels of enrollment.

This project consists of 27,500 square feet of new construction and 7000 square feet of renovation within the existing building.

Proposed New Construction

The first floor will house a vision clinic, a new service that was requested by students. To accommodate additional growth in alcohol services and support the campus’ alcohol initiatives, the John Fontaine, Jr. Center for Alcohol Awareness and Education, and the Health Promotion Department, will be relocated to the first floor. The Communications Department will move to the new wing.

The second floor will be dedicated solely to Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS) to meet the increasing demand for mental health services, and to accommodate additional clinician offices, group therapy rooms and testing space.

Proposed Renovation Highlights

First Floor
The Allergy/Travel Clinic will be moved to the first floor to improve patient accessibility and proximity to Urgent Care in the event of an allergic reaction. Urgent Care will gain a procedure room, have larger doors and widened hallways to allow stretcher access, and an increased waiting room to eliminate crowding. The pharmacy will be expanded to allow space for retail products to be displayed.

Second Floor
On the second floor, the Women’s Clinic will expand to accommodate additional demand for women’s health services given the widening gender gap on campus.

Third Floor
Information Technology will be provided additional space on the third floor to support the electronic health record, electronic pharmacy system, electronic clinical lab system and future digital radiography system. The Dental Clinic will add two new operatories.

Financing

Financing
Funding is through contributions to the Student Affairs auxiliary surplus and reserve funds accrued from the University Health Center’s operations.
